August 2012: Further Clips and Resources Added

Welcoming you back after the summer!  New clips and resources for the site and a look at the 1980 Olympics.

No Easy Way - Alan Wells: One Man's Olympics (Clips 1 and 2) - Documentary following the Edinburgh born sprinter, winner in 1980 of Great Britain's first Olympic 100m gold medal for 56 years.

Melrose v. Kelso 1962 - Earlston Scramble - Rugby match and a motorbike race in the Borders.

Saving of a Shabby Coat - Industrial scale cleaning during the interwar period at the Castlebank Dye Works in Glasgow.

Hospitals for All - Views of the range of services and facilities provided by the new National Health Service at sites across Scotland, shortly after its inception.

In the Clear - Entertainers Stanley Baxter and Jimmy Logan star in 1957 campaign to encourage people to be checked for tuberculosis.

May 2012: New Clips and Resources Added 

We've added more new film clips and learning resources to the site.  Some of the recently added films include:

Scotland V. England, Hampden 1948 - Footage of the match from Hampden Park in Glasgow.

War Weapons Week (Clips 1 and 2) - Rare colour footage of Scotland during the Second World War

The Silver City (Clips 1 and 2) - A tour of the sights of Aberdeen and the Dee Valley

Pakistani People in Scotland - A visit to an Urdu school and the Central Mosque in early 1960's Glasgow

Pitlochry Welcomes You - Tourist scenes with a twist, from the Perthshire town

Beautiful Drima - Colourful promotional film for a new type of thread featuring athletic children and old fashioned mild gender comedy

Schools Workshops (February 2012)

Find out what women did during the war with an interactive archive film workshop Mum was a World War 2 Hero for P4 and above at Glasgow Youth Film Festival.

Work continues to add new film clips and learning resources.  Some of the recently added films are:

March 2011: Co-operative Feature Resources Added

Thanks to sponsorship from the Co-operative Educational Trust, 3 new feature resources have been added on the Co-operative Movement.  These are for Primary, Additional Learning Needs (Primary) and Secondary.  More films about the Co-op and its advertising have also been added.  Search under Co-operative to find all relating films.

February 2011: New feature resources and a Close Reading Guide

Feedback from users has told us that feature resources are definitely a strength of the Scotland on Screen resource. And so, by popular demand, the team has added even more of these. 5 new ones have been added during February 2011.

In total, we currently have 21 feature resources. The team continues to welcome ideas and suggestions for additional feature resources around new topics.

The team has also produced a close reading guide to help teachers and students come to grips with screen narratives.

January 2011: Greater number of clips

Last year, the Scotland on Screen database contained almost 200 film clips representing 15 hours of footage. This year we will have over 200 new clips representing another 25 hours of footage.

December 2010: Moving Image Education and CPD

The Moving Image Education section of the website, accessible from the left hand menu, has been expanded and updated to include further information on the language of film and general class activities. It has been re-purposed as more focused “byte size” knowledge and training on the fundamental aspects of Moving Image Education. More CPD for Moving Image Education is currently being developed by the team and will appear within the Moving Image Education community on Glow in the coming weeks.

September 2010: Greater geographical coverage

Numerous film clips, over and above clips associated with Scotland’s principal cities and more densely populated regions, have been added to make the resource more geographically inclusive.

September 2010: Geo-tagging of film clips

We’ve now geo-tagged all our clips. This means that every clip now has location information associated with it. When a user now performs a search by entering a location in the search box, all clips tagged with that location are presented in the search results in the form of a Google Map with “pins” on the map showing all the records that refer to that location. When a pin on the map is clicked, a dialogue window pops up that shows the location and the title of the clip. Clicking the View record link on this pop-up takes the user straight to the film clip record. Of course, search results continue to be presented as a series of thumbnail records - when a thumbnail is clicked, the user is taken directly to the actual film clip in the usual way.

September 2010: Scotland on Screen on Glow

Over summer 2010, the Scotland on Screen online community on Glow has been refreshed. As the Scotland on Screen resource is a Moving Image Education project, its community now sits under a wider Moving Image Education community.
