Terms of Use

By using the Scotland on Screen website, you are deemed to have accepted and agreed to the following terms of use.

In addition, when requesting a log-in you will be asked to tick a box saying that you have read and agree to these terms and conditions.

Please note that all contact information supplied to us will only be used in conjunction with this site and will not be supplied to any third party company.

1) Public and Private User Access

Scotland on Screen has two modes of access – public (not logged in) mode and private (logged in) mode.

1.1) Public Access

Any user can browse, search and view any of our film clips but will not be able to download any film clip whilst in public access mode.

1.2) Private Access

Educational users, typically teachers, students and other lead practitioners, provided they have login credentials, can also download higher resolution clips for creative reuse such as for the creation of moving image essays, documentaries, art films, music and other cross-curricular projects.

2) Copyright

Scotland on Screen is a collaborative project between Education Scotland, Creative Scotland and National Library of Scotland. All intellectual property rights in this website excluding the stills and moving image files, are owned jointly by these three partners.

All moving image files and accompanying stills on this site are either owned by National Library of Scotland or, where possible, have been licensed by the third party copyright owners for use on this website.

For titles which a copyright owner has not been identified or cannot be contacted, a risk analysis has been carried out by National Library of Scotland. For copyright claims on unidentified titles, please Contact us.

3) Conditions of Licence for Public Users

As a public user, you are free to:

  • Search the database
  • View thumbnail images
  • View the moving image files via the video player
  • Screen films from the video player for educational purposes
  • Use the questions and learning activities for educational purposes

As a public user, you may not:

  • Distribute publicly – under no circumstances may these resources; including the still images, moving images and sound files on this website be copied, distributed, published, broadcast or sold by any method whatsoever. This includes, but is not limited to, uploading of any material to any website or file-sharing website (for example YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Google+ or similar sites), email, DVD and all other forms of distribution.

  • Exhibit publicly – you may not publically exhibit the still images or moving images from this site in a public gallery, museum, cinema or other public institution as part of that institution's regular business practice. Exhibition of the still images or moving images from this site may only be exhibited in a public gallery or museum where it has been part of a schools/educational project and where permission has been granted by the National Library of Scotland. Please contact movingimage@nls.uk to license moving / still images for exhibition purposes.

  • Use commercially – you may not sell or use these resources for any commercial purpose.

  • Misuse – any misuse of the resources, including the moving image and still image files on this site is strictly prohibited.

4) Conditions of Licence

Logged in users must work in educational contexts within the UK and should only ever use Scotland on Screen for educational purposes on a non-commercial and non-profit making basis.

Users working in educational contexts include the following groups:

  • School teachers
  • University or college lecturers
  • Freelance educators
  • Educators working in establishments outside Local Education Authorities, Schools, Universities (for example, film theatres,…)
  • Freelance filmmakers working in education
  • Lifelong learning institutions/providers including voluntary organisations and community groups.

Users working in the above contexts must be involved with the delivery of learning, for example, classroom teaching, delivering workshops, working with community groups or learning providers. These resources are licensed for use in the classroom and are not intended for incorporation into professional learning packs or teaching resources for distribution. Please contact movingimage@nls.uk to find out how to license use of materials for professional teaching resources.

As a logged in user, you are free to:

  • Search the database
  • View thumbnail images
  • View the moving image files via the embedded player
  • Screen films from the embedded player for educational purposes
  • Use the questions and learning activities for educational purposes
  • Download the moving image and still files for educational use in your educational institution
  • Screen and display downloaded files
  • Incorporate downloaded files into multi-media presentations (e.g. PowerPoint), films or produce derivative works
  • Upload materials to the Glow intranet (Glow users) or an intranet available only to your educational institution
  • Put materials onto CD-ROM for use within your educational institution
  • Upload derivative works incorporating the materials to Glow (Glow users) for sharing across your educational institution, local authority or nationally
  • Participate in any Glow Group (Glow users) dedicated to the Scotland on Screen site
  • Produce resources and worksheets for use in your educational institution
  • Upload and share resources on Glow (Glow users)
  • Share resources with other subscribers to the Scotland on Screen site and/or Glow (Glow users)

As a logged in user, you may not:

The still images, moving images and sound files available for download on this website must not be copied, distributed, published or broadcast outside your educational institution other than on the Glow network.
