About National Library of Scotland
The National Library of Scotland is the world's leading centre for the study of Scotland and the Scots. The Scottish Screen Archive is part of the collections division of the Library holding and preserving Scotland's moving image collection. The Scottish Screen Archive collects, preserves and provides access to a wide variety of films and videos recording over a century of Scotland’s history on film. This unique social history presents a living, breathing look at Scotland and her people on film, capturing not just the events of a particular time and place, but the reactions and emotions of those recorded. Scotland on Screen is a particularly significant partnership project for the NLS, in that it not only encourages wider access to the films, but also provides schools with the ability to interact with the footage both historically and analytically.
The films cover a wide range of subjects and filmmaking types from amateur home movies to promotional industrial and propaganda films to amateur fiction film and films made by local cinema managers. The films capture all aspects of life such as childhood, leisure and entertainment, working life, home life, wartime, education, travel and transport and many others.
