The Feature Resources are teaching and activity resources that are focused around a particular collection of films, topic or subject area. They have been designed by teachers for other teachers to promote Moving Image Education and cross-curricular working in Scottish schools. Each of the over twenty resource pages can be accessed by clicking on the hypertext links below.
Most are based around subjects taught regualrly in Scottish schools; many for primary schools, S1 and S2, but also for specific subject areas in S3-s6. If you would like to suggest a specific subject area for future inclusion, please send us your suggestion to scotlandonscreen@nls.uk
Feature Resources in Alphabetical order:
- A Day in the Home - Media Unit for S1/S2s in which pupils are asked to devise a survey about life in the 1950’s and 60’s, and using the information on it, and the information collected by my classmates, write a report about life in those days. This activity could be reproduced using other films in the collection.
- Advertising Detectives - an activity encouraging students to analyse the brand and production values of advertisments from the past to determine when they were made and what that says about society at the time.
- Childhood - resource encouraging children to look at similarities and differences between childhood today and in the not so distant past.
- City of Glasgow - Media Unit for S1/S2. Structured activities focussing on films about Glasgow designed to help students investigate the language of the moving image.
- Co-operative Movement - Primary – Activities suitable for upper primary (P4-7) for learning about the history of the Co-operative Movement which can relate to topics on Fairtrade, Eco schools, Enterprise, Advertising, New Lanark, Victorians, WW2 and Healthy eating.
- Co-operative Movement – Additional Learning Needs – Primary – A resource providing ideas to support children with communication needs with the aim to reduce the emphasis on reading and writing print texts while enabling children to explore and access the topic through other means.
- Co-operative Movement – Secondary – looks at the establishment, history, principles and methods of the Co-operative Movement. Intended for Standard Grade history ‘Changing Britain and Scotland 1880 – Present’ with a focus on the changing role of women and Int 1 & 2 history ‘From Cradle to Grave’. Can also be used for English, Art, PSE and Business.
- Design - a look at the importance of good design to industrial success and social improvement.
- Early Film and The Local Topical - a look at some of the earliest factual films and the birth of 'local' moving image news.
- Emigration - a celebration of Scotland and the movement of its people. Features in the Standard Grade History course and the Immigrants and Exiles course for Intermediate History.
- Emigration from Scotland in the 1960s - intended for use with Standard Grade pupils studying Changing Life in Scotland in Britain Context C: 1880s to the present day. Some of the films and activities may be suitable for work with upper primary and junior secondary pupils looking at life in Scotland from the 1930s-1960s.
- Experiences of School - the changing view of the importance of education to society during the last hundred years.
- The Family - an exploration of family life in 20th Century Scotland and some of the different challenges that they faced.
- Grierson and the Documentary Movement - a look at the life and work of John Grierson arguably Scotland's most important filmmaker.

Health and Housing in Urban Areas of Scotland 1930s-1960s - intended for use with Standard Grade pupils studying Changing Life in Scotland in Britain Context C: 1880s to the present day. Some films and activities may be suitable for work with upper primary and junior secondary pupils looking at life in Scotland from the 1930s-1960s

Old Age - Moving Image activities based around the changing ideas surrounding the importance of the elederly, old age and the social provision necessary to look after them.
- Politics and Representation - activities designed to investate the extensive social and economic changes in Scotland during the Twentieth Century through films produced at the time.
- Rivers and Coasts and their Industries - activities suitable for P4-7 and links the following clips from the Scotland on Screen Archive to the topic Rivers and Coasts paying particular attention to their industries.
- Scotland’s Changing Industries - designed for use with Intermediate 1 / 2 History pupils studying the unit ‘Campaigning for change: Social Change in Scotland 1900s-1979’, specifically the sections dealing with the decline of ‘old’ and the development of ‘new’ industries, and the changes in employment patterns in Scotland up to 1979.
- Scotland's New Towns - a look at the ambitious planning solution implemented to ease the problems of slum tenements and overcrowding in Scottish cities after WW2
- Scottish Identity - film-based activities designed to help students investigate what it means to be Scottish.
- The Swinging Sixties - invetigative activities using films made during this pivotal time in modern social development when many attitudes changed towards society, women, space, war, money and industry.
- World War 2: The Home Front - designed for use with Standard Grade History Unit II – International Co-operation and Conflict. Some of the activities may also be of use for work with senior primary and junior secondary pupils studying the Home Front in the Second World War.
