It Began on the Clyde - Documentary about stress and fatigue amongst industrial workers during WWII

A look at stress and worker fatigue amongst Clydeside workers during the war, and how timely medical treatment at Ballochmyle Emergency Medical Service Hospital helped to overcome this. In four years, over 10,000 workers of all ages were dealt with in this way. The film features shots of war workers on the Clyde, a drama documentary reconstruction of an overstretched doctor's surgery and conditions at Ballochmyle Hospital, Ayrshire.

  • Why was this film made and where do think it would have been shown?
  • What was the central character's job?

  • Why were so many old people still working?

Activities:

Modern Studies / Social History / Health and Wellbeing: This film seems to show the government taking a more active role in healthcare. Look at this film in the context of the development of the NHS.

History / Home Front: Research the working conditions and demands placed on ordinary people during World War Two on the home front. Many people were injured through overwork, ARP and Home Guard activities and simply as a result of the blackout.

Science / Technologies / Media Studies: Recreate some of the medical tests that the film refers to and film these to create your own film. This could be conducted as a role play and science exercise.
