Edinburgh (clip 1) - Everyday life in 1960s Edinburgh

This film shows what life was like in Edinburgh in the 1960s, with glimpses into its historical heritage and featuring plenty of street scenes.

This clip features panoramic views over the city of Edinburgh and Arthur's Seat and talks about the historical development of the settlement illustrated by contemporary prints and drawings. The film then looks at the New Town with shots of a fishwife delivering fish with a basket of creel on her back.

Activities:

Geography/History: Find out about the New Town - who was it built for?

Geography: Edinburgh Old and New Town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site - why? What other UNESCO World Heritage Sites are there in Britain and/or the world?

Media Studies: Import the film into editing software and create a tourist promotional film for Edinburgh. If you are based in Edinburgh you could mix this with new footage (e.g. Scottish Parliament Building, Tram works, Fringe Festival etc.)

ICT: Take stills and information from the film and use desktop publishing software to create a tourist brochure for Edinburgh.
