Counter Courtesy (clip) - Co-operative Society training film

A training film for employees of the Co-op on how to present themselves, how to deal with different types of customer and how to learn as much as possible about the trade. In this clip, we visit the food department and the film gives us helpful advice on how to provide better and quicker service, how to keep the department well stocked and how to deal with potentially difficult customers.

Questions:

  • How does the Co-op store differ from modern supermarkets?
  • Who was this film made for and who funded it?
  • Is there any advice being given to the workers in the film which would be relevant and is missing in today’s society?
  • Would you want to work in the co-op if it operated like this? Why or why not?
  • If we could only source food from Scotland, what products could you get and what would you miss the most?

Activities:

Modern Studies / Social History: Research how the Co-operative Movement was established and what elements still exist today?

Citizenship / Enterprise: Study the concept of Fairtrade. Create a Fairtrade cook book and sell it through the school.

Maths / Geography / Modern Studies: Compare the range of products and geographical locations of food available post-war and today? Report your findings graphically and visually.

Debate: The Co-operatives were locally based community businesses. In the current world climate, should multinationals hold the position they do or should there a return to community based small businesses?

Drama: Create a role play in pairs between a complaining customer and shopkeeper. How will it be resolved?
