Activities:

RME / History: The standing stones at Callanish are in the shape of both a circle and a cross. The cross only became a symbol of Christianity during the Dark Ages and some people suggest it may have been borrowed from Celtic sources. Research the symbolism of the Celtic Cross and investigate why the stones may have been arranged in this way.

Music: Learn waulking songs that highlander and islanders sang as they worked and went about their daily business. Create your own waulking songs to suit different school tasks.

History: There are many standing stones in Scotland, research other examples and other theories of why they were created, and by who.

Art and Design / Enterprise: There are many beautiful Celtic motifs. Research the different patterns used and create your own modern Celtic design to be used on T-shirts. Sell these T-shirts as part of an Enterprise project.
