Beagan Gaidhlig (clip 2) - Gaelic lessons on the Isle of Lewis

This programem (the title means beginning Gaelic) features Gaelic lessons from the Isle of Lewis. This clip shows a woman washing clothes as well as a Gaelic cookery lesson on how to make a black pudding.

  • What impression does the film present of island life?
  • Can you identify and translate the recipe ingredients?
  • Why are some words easily recognisable?
  • What changes in technology would islanders have seen in the last 35 years?

Activities:

Geography / Maths: Research island industries and changing islander incomes in comparison to people on the mainland. Present the changing domestic product figures and changing incomes in graphs and other tables.

Geography / History: Research island houses and community life and discuss how these have changed in the last fifty years.

Craft / Art and Design: Research and build a croft or blackhouse.

RME: Religion and spirituality is an important part of Highland life. Research the different faiths of these island communities and discuss the social implications.

English / Geography / PSE: Debate the pros and cons of island life and the different outlook that growing up there might provide on the world. To do this you might want to use Glow to form links with highland and island schools.
