Time to Think - Liz Lochhead (clip) - TV programme about the Scots Makar / National Poet

This television documentary about Scotland's National Poet/Makar looks at the life and work of Liz Lochhead. The extract features excerpts from poetry readings at the Glasgow Theatre Club and her opinions on poetry.

Shots include: Images of Liz from childhood; Glasgow Theatre Club with Liz and acress Siobhan Redmond getting ready for their act. Liz and Siobhan sing 'I'm not your little woman' on stage to applause. Liz discusses poetry and then talks to pupils at Holyrood Secondary School. Liz recites the following poems:

Activities:

English: Do a close reading of each poem featured in the clip. You may want to play around with showing the reading first or after you have analysed the poem.

English: Liz Lochhead describes the stereotype of poets before discussing her own process of writing or approaching her poetry. Ask the class to write a poem about a member of their family using traditional meter or using ‘free’ rhythm.

English: Discuss whether artist expression is a useful way of working out problems or is a form of indulgence. Think about examples of songs and poems from well-known artists and musicians. Think of songs that have particular meaning to them and explain why?
