Description

This film shows manufacturing processes in the world famous Templeton factory in Glasgow. This introductory clip includes footage of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation as well as scenes from the East End of Glasgow in the 1960s.

Activities

Moving Image Education: Stop the clip after the picture of Queen Victoria. Ask the class what type of film they think they are watching? Then after you have seen the whole clip discuss the techniques advertisers and promotional filmmakers use to try and impress their audiences.

Art and Design: Look at both clips from this film as a critical activity or research for an art unit. Choose work from James Templeton Weavers, Harris Tweed or Paisley Pattern.

Business Studies: Compare Bridgeton then and now, and investigate the decline of the textile industry and the arrival of cheaper clothes and textiles from abroad.

Modern Studies: The weaver is a representative of what used to be commonly called the artisan class. Investigate the history of this forgotten class, the rise of mechanized production and discuss the strata of contemporary society.

Create rug using recycled clothing.
