The Smiths in Scotland (clip 1)

The views of English men and women who have made their homes in Scotland

  • Print All

Description

A plane lands at Prestwick airport. People walk through the airport building. Planes taxi and line up on the runway outside. A propelor driven plane lands on the beach of an outer Hebridean island and there are wide landscape shots across a bay, and over mountains and foothills. The plane leaves again, and we cut to Princes Street in Edinburgh. People mill about. Buses pass tower blocks and we visit Glasgow, see women look in shop windows, children enjoying the bustle. We see a crane, and shots of construction, a car factory, an oil refinery, shots of men working at various instruments and machines testing aircraft engines. A room full of engineers build components. We see the university, with graduates leaving the main building and crossing the courtyard. There are shots of the new university, and shots inside the laboratory of bottles and science students at work mixing chemicals. Children learn to swim in a pool, and young children paint in a classroom. There is a shot from the hills of Glasgow's urban sprawl. We cross the Forth Road Bridge with a travelling shot, and pass along the road through woodlands alongside a river and past a landscape. Families laugh as they drive convertibles along. Sailboats play on a lake.
